MUSIQUES POUR LES FUNÉRAILLES ROYALES ESPAGNOLES
La Maîtrise de Toulouse
Les Sacqueboutiers
Mark Opstad

Description
The inspiration for this recording was the desire of both La Maîtrise de Toulouse and Les Sacqueboutiers, the renowned Toulouse ensemble of early brass instruments, to collaborate on an original programme which would highlight the unique quality of combined children’s voices and wind instruments of the Renaissance. One of the most famous works of this period, Victoria’s Requiem lent itself particularly well to this idea, and that a performance combining the ‘niños cantorcicos’, as the choristers in Spain were known, and the ‘ministriles’, wind players attached to cathedral churches, could create a fresh impression of the sonorities usually associated with this work. It is the centre-piece of this programme of music for a Royal Spanish funeral which also includes several unknown and rediscovered pieces recorded here for the first time.

Reviews
‘It sounds glorious…’ BBC Radio 3 In Tune
‘… A really attractive sound… beautifully blended’ Kirsten Gibson BBCRadio3 Record Review ,European Early Music Day March 2020
‘In past reviews of earlier recordings [of Victoria Requiem], I have expressed my preference for the quality and interpretation of the Westminster Cathedral singers. There are a number of ways that Mark Opstad has crafted an interpretation that equals the austerity and sincerity of David Hill…. After repeated listening to both…, I find Opstad has created a worthy successor, different but just as satisfying.’ American Record Guide May/June 2020
‘…the results are vividly energised sonorities, at times a passionately fervent wall of sound in expansive acoustics. With noble solemnity and broad, flowing tempi, this revelatory and utterly convincing Victoria is surrounded by a corona of motets from Guerrero, Marques, Alonso Lobo, Romero, and Patino.’ Choir & Organ September 2020
‘The audio recording, engineered by Gary Cole, … accurately captures not only the sonic qualities of the dual forces involved, but also the scope and open space of the Temple du Salin where the recording sessions took place. If you are looking for a recording that conveys the solemnity of Spanish Renaissance rites and worship, look no further.’ Classical Music Sentinel March 2020
‘…sung with immaculate tuning, blend and ensemble. I greatly enjoyed this anthology, which I have no hesitation in recommending with much enthusiasm.’ Cathedral Music 1/2020
‘..an excellent survey of Renaissance Spanish cathedral music all sung and played to the very highest standards… the quality is outstanding and deserves to be widely heard. ’ Cross Rhythms 9/10 February 2020
