Description

Recorded in the glorious acoustic of Truro Cathedral the first recording from the critically-acclaimed choir of Truro Cathedral, directed by Christopher Gray, of Spanish and Portuguese polyphony.

The recording features works from the Golden Age of Renaissance polyphony, including two major mass settings by Victoria (Missa Simile est regnum coelorum) and Lobo (Missa Vox Clamantis), together with Guerrero’s motet on Simile est regnum coelorum, Vivanco’s large-scale eight-part setting of the Magnificat, and Victoria’s ever-popular motet O quam gloriosum.

Reviews

‘As austerely beautiful as the cathedrals that it filled, the music of the Spanish Renaissance stands apart from its Italian and French counterparts. It’s a sound world of pointed arches and thrusting verticals that has little interest in anything as insipid as loveliness… Gray’s energised, forward-driving phrasing and the forthright delivery of Truro’s fine choristers, makes for an exciting performance…polyphony that never loses momentum, pushing right through to the sudden, welcome stillness of the solo.’  Gramophone September 2017

‘Many real trebles adorn the upper registers of the excellent Truro Cathedral Choir in more Iberian repertoire. …brightly resonant acoustics and clear recording afford no hiding place: just as well, therefore, that they set high standards with plenty of fine phrasing, full-blooded tone, dynamic contrast and a cheery lack of self-indulgence. ’
