Description

In the last few years Philip Stopford has emerged from among the younger generation of British composers as one of the most popular and prolific writers of new choral music, and is in wide demand on both sides of the Atlantic. His beautifully-crafted music combines uplifting classic texts with memorable, radiant melodies, and glorious harmonies. This latest recording adds another dimension with wonderfully-colourful and expertly-scored orchestral accompaniments.

Reviews

‘Stopford’s accessible and endearing church anthems are heard here in specially orchestrated versions, played and sung with tenderness.’ **** BBC Music December 2017

‘…Philip Stopford can write a good tune … The composer has been extremely clever by orchestrating many of the pieces, and he’s made an excellent job of it. His rhythmic setting of A child is born in Bethlehem strikes the right chord and his lilting arrangement of We three kings would encourage me to go waltzing down the aisle! Truro Cathedral has an excellently trained choir which is sympathetically accompanied by the admirable BBC National Orchestra of Wales.’  Choir and Organ

‘The performances are excellent…. Fans of Stopford’s music will be delighted.’  American Record Guide

‘Stopford has a genuine melodic gift, his music displays fine craftsmanship and, crucially, he communicates directly with the listener.’  MusicWeb

‘Tone quality is often very beautiful (especially from the trebles and sopranos) and intonation is immaculate throughout….The orchestral sound, though, is unfailingly polished, as one would expect.’  Organists’ Review

‘Stopford can bring new life to a familiar text…this collection includes “Ubi Caritas”, “Ave Maria” and “There Is No Rose” to name three. Also he can freshen up a familiar tune in a new arrangement, as shown here with “We Three Kings”. Choirs will enjoy singing the music of Philip Stopford, audiences enjoy hearing it and worshippers should find much of it to be a blessing.’  crossrhythms.co.uk
